What remote-first employers actually check, the timezone question, and how to make an international application credible.
Remote roles are the fastest way for an Indian developer to be paid in a stronger currency, and the competition for them is global. The application has to answer three questions a local one does not: can you work the hours, can you be paid, and can you be trusted without an office.
Overlap with the team's core hours matters more than where you live. State your timezone and the overlap you can offer in the first two lines of your note. “IST, 4 hours of overlap with CET” is more useful to a hiring manager than “flexible”.
Most remote-first companies hire contractors through platforms (Deel, Remote, EOR providers) or through your own registered entity. You do not need to solve this before applying, but knowing the common routes stops you from treating it as a red flag.
A public repository, a deployed project, a write-up of something you built — remote employers weigh portfolios more heavily because they cannot rely on a reference network. Two solid projects beat ten tutorial clones.
“Remote (US)” or “Remote (EU)” in a posting is a legal and payroll statement, not a preference. Applying anyway wastes a week. On RoleBurst, the workplace field marks remote roles, and the location and country filters separate “remote, anywhere” from “remote, within one region”.
