Job Description
About the Engineering Team
Chegg’s engineering team is a community of passionate builders who partner closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to shape the future of online learning. Grounded in Chegg’s core values— putting students first, acting with integrity, and holding a high bar for excellence —we build with care and accountability. As the world and our industry continue to evolve , we stay true to those principles: we invest in quality, design for scale and longevity, and avoid shortcuts (hello unit tests and documentation) so we can deliver reliable, high-impact experiences on time.
About the Role
We're hiring a Software Engineer II, Frontend to own the design, quality, and delivery of features across our student-facing web applications. This role is focused on building React/Next.js product experiences, the GraphQL-powered data layers behind them, and increasingly, AI-powered study features (step-by-step solutions, Q&A, and personalized study assistance). You will also contribute across the stack as needed — this is a frontend-first role with full-stack reach, and you should be comfortable enough with backend concepts and AWS infrastructure to ramp into our Java or Python backend services when a task calls for it.
What You'll Do
Own frontend features end-to-end — architecture, implementation, testing, staged rollout, and production monitoring — across student-facing web application. Translate product requirements into component architecture, GraphQL query/schema boundaries, and client-state contracts (React Query, Redux Toolkit, or similar) that other engineers build on. Debug cross-system issues that surface in the UI — GraphQL supergraph errors, auth/session edge cases, server/client rendering mismatches — by tracing root cause across the stack. Build AI-powered study features responsibly: validate model output (e.g., step-by-step solutions, Q&A answers) before it reaches the UI, design graceful fallbacks for …truncated… us…
